Hongdae is a vibrant and lively area in Northern Seoul that is known for its urban art scene, street performers, and indie music. At night, Hongdae turns into the place to be for drinks and fun times, with street food vendors popping up, bars blasting their music, and young people wandering around. Hongdae is not to be missed if you are in Seoul, and while the nightlife can be fun, there are also some great things to do in the daytime! Enjoy!
Trick Eye Museum
A hidden gem in the middle of one the busiest shopping districts in Seoul, the Trick Eye museum is made for photo-ops, and is fun for locals and tourists alike. A great way to spend the afternoon with friends, the exhibits are set up to give the illusion of 3-D in photos! There is also an ice-museum with an ice slide, and a carnival area where you can play carnival style games. Make sure to bring a good camera and at least one other person to help take pictures.
Shop on Walking Street
Hongdae is home to cute, trendy fashions and is full of cheap finds for the fashion savvy. If you don’t like crowds, it’s best to go in the morning, as this area stays open late and hoards of people flood the street to begin drinking when the sun goes down. Seoul is truly one of the best places in the world to buy fashionable clothing and jewelry at a reasonable price. If you enjoy shopping, you will love it here!
Hello Kitty Cafe
In the back streets of Hongdae there is a pink gate that breaks the monotony of cinder block walls. Located right next to the main shopping street is the entrance to a Hello Kitty themed cafe. I was never a huge fan of Hello Kitty, but this place truly goes all out with a gift-shop, pink walls, and tasty deserts. The drinks are a little expensive (as with most themed cafes), but this place is not to be missed if you are a fan of girly things or Hello Kitty.
Bau House Cafe
I had been to multiple cat cafes previously, but had yet to visit a dog cafe. I have to say, it did not disappoint. There is no entrance fee, but you have top purchase a fairly expensive drink. Dogs are free to walk on tables and love to come visit you and cuddle. There are some real cuties here, and they have the cafe separated into an area for big dogs and little dogs.
Hongdae offers so many unique cafes, with a sheep cafe being one of them! Thanks Nature Cafe allows you to have your tea or coffee whilst petting sheep. This makes for a great photo opportunity, and the sheep are very friendly and sociable! They are kept in a little pen outside of the cafe, so you don’t need to worry about the smells bothering you.
Street Art and Performers in Hongdae
If you are in Hongdae, you should check out some of the street art. There is also a mural wall, placed in an alley close to the university. Hongik University is famous for its art and design courses, and all around this area you can find artsy galleries, design shops, and cafes. While walking around, you will probably also see many street performers, singers, and shows. The Hongdae Children’s Park is a great place to hear live music and socialize, and it gets quite crowded at nighttime!
I heard about Gusto Taco through word-of-mouth, and was happy to find out that it was not all hype. Gusto Taco serves some delicious Mexican food, and the owner is so nice and friendly. Their tortillas are freshly made and they import some of their drinks from Mexico. Highly recommended!
Well, what are some of your favorite places in Hongdae? Do any of these look fun to you?
